Mexico, we are sorry. (And it’s not just Mexico, though they are the biggest target — this going out to all of those who are friends of Americans, currently being demonized by the American government.)
Studies (conservative funded ones, mind you) have repeatedly shown that immigrants commit crimes and are incarcerated at half the rate of American citizens. And 90% of crimes the immigrants are prosecuted for are non-violent offenses, like… coming here to seek a better life against all odds, and few accessible ways to do so legally.
Immigrants to the US pay close to if not over $100 billion in taxes each year. Our labor growth rate, our birth rate, our rural economies — all would be in tatters, declining if not for immigrants who come to this country, buying into the American dream, and dreaming themselves of a better life.
And this *gestures broadly* is how we are repaying them.
We can do better than this. And they deserve better.
Immigrants have made America great. Specifically, immigrants from Mexico, Latin, and South America.
Let’s remind them they are welcome here. And if they want to be, they should be able to become Americans too.
